ABOUT STRONG OHANA

We are where people turn first when they want to make strength training a habit — not a fad, or a forgone “no-go zone.” Strength training works best with structure, understanding, repetition, and an emphasis on preventing injury and accidents at all costs. Having other people to help you as you start is an unwritten rule. But who helps those who have no friends who want to go to the gym with them — much less any idea how to properly program their movement practice for life?

That is where Strong Ohana comes in. We are a global resource on how to get started safely in strength training (aka PRT — progressive resistance training), and on what the research says about PRT and how it might relate to a disease or condition you or a loved one might be facing.

Our goal

  1. Increase the adoption of progressive resistance training in the general population over 40 years old.
  2. Make it easier for people from all walks of life to access high-quality, healthy-lifestyle information and professional coaching on a sliding scale.

Our philosophy

We know from decades of data-driven research that progressive resistance training is one of the best interventions for age-related complications — especially bone density loss, muscle wasting (sarcopenia), and metabolic health.

Most importantly, we train people to be capable for the people, places, and activities they care about. This is an app that is a key to a global community of the Strong Ohana — people who help each other become strong in body and mind, to live the best life they can based on their goals, challenges, and resources.

As our Foundation grows, we will be able to provide grants and below-market coaching costs to qualified members.

How we work

Learn

We start by understanding where you are, what you're working with (or against), and the capacity you want to build for the life you want to live. From there, we build a custom training program to start you on a path of consistent, progressive resistance training.

Adapt

Once your first program is complete, we assess your progress and build the next one around your advancing capacity. Coaching means new techniques become second nature — safety comes first, always.

Grow

We coach people at every stage of their strength journey — from the very first session to years of consistent training. Consistency is the most important stage of all — it's what turns capacity into a lifelong asset.

Local chapters

We're building local chapters — SO…Kona!, SO…NYC, SO…Sydney!, and more to come — so members nearby can train together, or just show up for each other.

An app built for a lifelong movement habit

Strong Ohana is an app, but it's part of a bigger organization dedicated to making strength training for everyone — and getting everyone training.

We treat movement as medicine: your program is a dose, sized and adjusted by your coach, not a routine you run on autopilot. Log today's session, note your weight and reps, and we adjust your next dose with you — coaching that continues between sessions, not just during them. It all builds the same thing: capacity, for the long run. We acknowledge the world-leading work on Exercise is Medicine at the US and Australian organizations.

The coaches

Shane

Coaches barbell strength for people who have never touched a bar, and for those coming back after years away. Every session is about building capacity you can rely on — not chasing a look or a number.

strengthcoachshane

Zane

Works on movement quality, confidence under load, and training that fits around work and family — building the capacity to keep showing up for both.
