Using Powerlifting Athletes to Determine Strength Adaptations Across Ages in Males and Females: A Longitudinal Growth Modelling Approach

Studied: Competitive powerlifters across the age span, both sexes (large longitudinal dataset)

Tracking real competitive powerlifters across decades, older lifters who kept training continued gaining strength for years — women in their 60s and 70s were still improving, with only the oldest male group showing a very slight average decline.

Association Between Muscular Strength and Mortality in Men: Prospective Cohort Study

Studied: 8,762 men, aged 20–80, followed avg. 18.9 years

Tracking nearly 9,000 men for almost 19 years, those with greater muscular strength had notably lower rates of death from any cause and from cancer — even after accounting for aerobic fitness.
